Inspiring Joy through art – Introducing our artist-in-residence Genevieve Lamb

Remember The Wild are excited to introduce our new artist in residence Genevieve Lamb. We were struck by her bold and colourful digital artworks that are truly joyful to look at. She wishes to promote curiosity and exploration through her art, and inspire positive wellbeing and mindfulness. We are thrilled to share her work with you that will transport you to new and familiar places alike.

Genevieve spent a lot of time outdoors as a child, her fascination for plants and animals coupled with her love for drawing led to her chosen career path. ‘Throughout university, I realised that I was happiest when drawing nature, and I started exploring why that might be. It turns out that nature makes us happy, and I love being able to spread that happiness and joy through pictures’

Genevieve has practiced her art in a few different mediums such as water colours and print work such as linocuts, woodcuts and screen printing. However her preferred medium is digital. She said ‘I find working digitally far less messy, and easier to use out in the field. Most of the time these days I’m working directly onto my iPad, so if I’m on a train, or waiting at a café, I can be working at the same time, but I can also easily take it with me on a hike, or on holidays, without it being too much to lug around.’

Like us at Remember The Wild Genevieve laments the loss of connection to nature that is felt by so many. She says ‘ I think everyone has a connection to nature! It’s part of us, and it’s shaped our species to become what we are today. However, I also think a lot of us have lost that connection as we grow up. I think we lose a bit of childlike wonder somewhere along the years, so I am trying to build that back up, both for myself and others.

We also share the same passion for reconnecting people with nature, whether it is by visiting a national park, or rediscovering local nature by going for a walk around the neighbourhood or gardening in your backyard. She said ‘ Remember The Wild are trying to connect people with nature in the same way that I am, so it felt like a perfect match! They are a truly inspiring organisation, with so much passion and drive, and that’s a very exciting thing to see.

Genevieve is keen to find different ways to point people to nature close to home, she said ‘We all live in different landscapes, so it can sometimes feel hard to find and appreciate nature, especially when living in cities or dense suburbs. There is plenty of resilient nature surviving in our humanised landscapes, which can be incredibly fascinating. I also try to get people excited about animals and plants they may not have heard of, or noticed before, to pique their curiosity’

‘One of my most recent projects is a series of prompts to help people find an easy way to connect with their version of nature – we all live in different landscapes, so it can sometimes feel hard to find and appreciate nature, especially when living in cities or dense suburbs. There is plenty of resilient nature surviving in our humanised landscapes, which can be incredibly fascinating. I also try to get people excited about animals and plants they may not have heard of, or noticed before, to pique their curiosity.’

Like Remember The Wild Genevieve believes that creating a shift in how people value and appreciate nature can truly inspire action to protect it. She said ‘Nature provides immeasurable benefits to our well-being, and I want to help people rediscover and appreciate that connection. By fostering a sense of wonder, and curiosity through art, I hope to inspire people to re-establish their bond with the natural world, and to hopefully inspire them to preserve and protect our environment. What’s that saying? Through connection, understanding; through understanding, appreciation; through appreciation, protection. (a slight variation on a Tilden Freeman quote, I think one of my past mentors made the change, and it stuck with me)’

Genevieve believes that climate change is one of the biggest challenges that we ware all facing this decade. She said ‘Everything is part of a system, both smaller, and larger systems, which are always interacting. It’s all so delicately balanced. Hopefully through organisations like RTW, more awareness of the world around us means more people wanting to make a change, and to change the future.’

She would like to encourage and collaborate with other artists to create more human-nature connections through their art. She said ‘ think it goes straight back to spreading joy and happiness. Illustrators and artists have such a great platform to influence peoples moods, thoughts, and ideals, so I think we should definitely be using that for the benefit of those viewers, and of the world around us! Plus, really, nature is a treasure trove of inspiration!’
